'All meaningful and lasting change starts first on the inside and works its way out'

I have often heard people say that the only constant we have in life is death and taxes. So true, and I also have come to learn that change is the one constant we don’t acknowledge and what we most need to embrace. You see we are uncomfortable with change and yet it is something we experience daily. If we can become comfortable with the uncomfortableness of change, we will shift our lives into a more creative space.

Understanding why we do not like change is a great starting point. Awareness is the key to change.
 

It does not like us to change, even when that change is growth and good for us. Our saboteurs, as the name suggest, is only interested in doing the least possible to get by and will sabotage opportunities if it can. It thrives on fear and creates the fear through the perspective that change is hard and bad for you.

Imagine you have an opportunity for a promotion. You saboteur will create fear through statements like; “You will be travelling and away from home a lot more,” “You are not ready for management or you haven’t got a degree.” See how negative and limiting these beliefs are and they are the playground of the saboteur. My favorite one which I have been dealing with is, “Social media is destructive and will harm your family life.”

If we can understand that it is negative limiting beliefs that drive the saboteur, we can choose a more powerful affirming belief that shifts the playing fields and embraces change. We have grown up observing people accepting limiting beliefs and have been conditioned ourselves to accept these limiting beliefs. You only need ask yourself what your beliefs around change are. The experiences that shaped these beliefs are around parents who had the same job for many years, the same holidays every year, same dinners on the same night each week, weekends are for play and the week is for hard work etc. Just note how quickly we are put into a structured life that resists change. You have the power to choose to embrace change and move forward.

Step 1
Identify what area in your life you feel most trapped or stagnant. On a scale of 1 – 10 with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest, rate yourself. Let’s say you identify your physical and health side is a 4. Now write down a column labeled 4 and describe what your current experience is, (What you think and feel about this area of your life). Write down a column labeled 10 and describe what a 10 looks like.

Step 2
What things do you say to yourself that keep you trapped in this 4? Identify the negative limiting belief and fuel for your saboteur. Write these down and note the negative energy and draining effect it has on you. See how it holds you in a state of complacency and probably fuels procrastination

Step 3
Write out a positive affirming belief around your physical health and that serves you feeling like you are at a 10. (Specific steps to doing this can be found by clicking on this link and opening the Writing Positive Affirmations Free download – (http://peopleactiv.com/downloads-articles/)

Step 4
Say this new belief to yourself repeatedly with feeling. Say it mornings, afternoons, when brushing your teeth. Practice, practice and practice some more until it becomes part of your experience. This is change.

Step 5
Take action. Where in your life can you embrace small changes? This approach shifts your mind and heart set and places you in the space of accepting and embracing change. This is the space that allows you to grow.

A personal example is that I have long resisted Social media. Here is how I changed.

Step 1 – Business is slow and social media is not an avenue to grow business as it is destructive. I have placed it at a level 2. A level 2 is where I am controlled by social media and it takes me away from family time. A level 10 is where I am in complete control, social media serves me and I have ample time for my family. It serves growing my brand and my business
Step 2 – Limiting beliefs include statements like - Social media is destructive, it destroys families, it breaks down communication
Step 3 – Social media grows my brand, connects me with people and delivers my message assisting me in living my purpose
Step 4 – I say this to myself every day and have embraced social media
Step 5 – I took action and can now introduce you to our new connection points – see below

So change is possible, we can all change if we choose to and if we shift our perspective through which we observe change. Our saboteurs will run our lives if we allow them. We always have choice.
